The “Friends” are a small group of volunteers
who carry out regular work parties to help maintain and enhance this lovely
area. Some of the tasks already undertaken have resulted in an increase
in the variety of butterflies, amphibians and wild flowers present on the
Our main aims are to:-
• Maintain and enhance the reserve.
• Protect this vital green space for our local community.
• Provide the correct habitat to encourage a wider range of species.
• Raise awareness of the site
• Provide the opportunity to ‘get involved’.
We are always eager to meet new “Friends”
and everyone is welcome to come along regardless of age, ability or knowledge.
The reserve has recently
been judged for a Community Green Flag award. We were fortunate that the
inspection took place on a lovely sunny morning and the site was looking
at its best. We will get the results in a few weeks but we are hopeful that
all the hard work the 'Friends' group and Derby Parks Volunteers have put
in over the last 12 months will pay off and we will gain a third Green Flag.
We should be notified early next month and we will post the result as soon
as we hear.
Some members of our
group also work with the Chellaston Action Group preparing various beds
and planters for the Chellaston in Bloom judging, which will take place
in the coming weeks. It would be an excellent achievement if Chellaston
were to gain two awards this summer.
Thanks to everyone
who supported us at the recent Spirit of Chellaston event. All the money
we made from our plant sales and children game go towards our running costs,
without this we could not maintain the progress we have achieved over recent
years. Your continued support is greatly appreciated.
