Welcome to the Friends of Chellaston Brickworks

Local Nature Reserve

The “Friends” are a small group of volunteers who carry out regular work parties to help maintain and enhance this lovely area. Some of the tasks already undertaken have resulted in an increase in the variety of butterflies, amphibians and wild flowers present on the reserve.

Our main aims are to:-
• Maintain and enhance the reserve.
• Protect this vital green space for our local community.
• Provide the correct habitat to encourage a wider range of species.
• Raise awareness of the site
• Provide the opportunity to ‘get involved’.

We are always eager to meet new “Friends” and everyone is welcome to come along regardless of age, ability or knowledge.

Latest News
As it has been such a wet autumn, we are struggling to complete our planned Autumn/winter tasks. At this time of year we should be well into the annual round of grass cutting but with the amount of rain we have had the schedule is falling behind. Fortunately as there are always so many jobs to do we are still keeping busy on our monthly task sessions.

Towards the end of November we will be planting a Community Orchard. With the help of Derby Parks Volunteers, a variety of fruit trees will be planted, and once mature they will provide a `pick your own` opportunity for local residents. It will be a few years before the trees produce a good crop but we look forward to watching them grow and will keep you informed of progress.
